Patrice Rushen

Multi-Grammy nominated artist, Patrice Rushen, has garnered wide admiration for her groundbreaking achievements.

A classically trained pianist, Rushen has spent a lifetime honing the skills that make her one of the music industry’s most versatile and sought after artists. In 1998, she was honored by the music industry when her adult contemporary CD, “Signature”, received a Grammy nomination. The CD also received an NAACP Image Award nomination and also landed in the top ten of the adult contemporary jazz charts. The critically lauded, chart-topping style she championed — a jazz/R&B/pop fusion that combines melodic accessibility with instrumental prowess.

Rushen has amassed an impressive list of “firsts”. She was the first female musical director for many of the entertainment industry’s top award shows, which include the Grammy Awards, the Emmy Awards, the People’s Choice Awards, the NAACP Image Awards and HBO’s “Comic Relief V.”

Considered one of the world’s top jazz pianists, she has performed with and produced for such esteemed artists as Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Prince, Nancy Wilson, Sheena Easton, Carlos Santana, and Freddie Hubbard. She is an award-winning composer of symphonic music, some of which was commissioned by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Rushen received an Honorary Doctorate of Music degree in 2005, from Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music for her “outstanding contribution to music and culture” where she is also the Ambassador For Artistry In Education. Most recently, she has been appointed Chair of Popular Music at the USC Thornton School of Music.

Rushen spends whatever free time she has working closely with the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, NARAS “Grammy In The Schools” program and other organizations dedicated to establishing music education and mentorship programs for inner-city youth.

On TM -

"Development as a practitioner of the art of music demands of the artist, to feel, to listen, to absorb and to submit to Truth. Years of practicing music teaches us ultimately, that when one is finely trained and tuned, it becomes apparent that the knowledge and technique needed to respond appropriately musically, gives one the confidence to then get out of the way so that the music can happen. Its truth moves through you.

"Transcendental Meditation as a practice and technique allows for the most natural acquisition of knowledge and courage to stay in the moment and to quietly surrender to the calm of the truth. There's so much to be gained by understanding the power of calm.  TM has been for me a gentle force, pointing me towards my truth and purpose ... Teaching me how to recognize and reflect responsible, positive energy in my art and in every aspect of my life."
